A&P by John Updike - Essay TopicsRecently, a well known American author has made an interesting essay topic that discusses changes in the medical industry and the common man's relationship with it. John Updike is one of the most well-known authors of the last few decades. He has written some of the best novels of the last decade. The essay discusses the world in which we live, the growth of technology, new technologies, advances in medicine, medical advances, and many other subjects. It is a great read, if you have not read Updike's work before. I will review this essay for those who have not read it.There are a lot of different essay topics that he has written. His most recent book was a novel titled, 'Hamlet on the Hudson.' This book is based on Hamlet, Shakespeare's play about King Hamlet, from the 'Othello' play. In this book, the main character is Othello.Updike is known for writing short novels that are enjoyable to read. 'Othello' is a series of 10 chapters, where he makes a jo ke, then finishes the book with a joke. In this series of essays, he is making jokes about the world of medicine and the common man's relationship with it.In this particular essay, he mentions that physicians feel that the common man is weak. He also goes on to say that doctors do not feel that the common man can comprehend the problems they are faced with. He goes on to say that, doctors often ask if the common man has ever gone to the hospital and experienced the kind of problems they are facing.John goes onto discuss the relationship between the medicine and the society. The art of medicine is a very personal thing. The medicine of the past was used by the Greeks to help treat common illness, now the medicine is used by doctors for treatment of common illness. The relationship between medicine and society has been changing, but it will not stop. These kinds of essays are extremely important issues to talk about. I have read quite a few of these essays over the years. They are very enlightening and entertaining.Check out his unique essay topics. I think the company that I admire most is SpaceX. I find space to be super interesting. Unfortunately, I was not born before the space race in the 1960s and could not follow the exciting leaps in innovation being made. With SpaceX coming to prominence as it competes with government-sponsored programs and other privately owned ones, I am thrilled to be able to follow the advancements they are making in the industry.Who is your favorite professor? My favorite professor is probably Dr. Lisa Spiller. I have found her classes not only teach me basic terminology and concepts but allow me to creatively employ them in r eal-world projects. The projects that I have done in her classes have been so of the greatest learning experiences in my time at CNU.What did you enjoy most about your business school? I enjoy the culture at the Luter Business School. All of the students and faculty are just so friendly; I never feel like I am alone when I am in the Luter building or at an event, even if I am not with anyone who Iââ¬â¢ve already made acquaintance with. There is no feelings of competitiveness, which was something I was nervous about coming into college. At Luter, everyone just pushes each other to do their best. I would also say that the culture at Luter is very professional. People act with the same honesty and integrity that I would expect to find in a real work environment. What is the biggest lesson you gained from studying business? The biggest lesson that I have gained from studying business is that there is a fine balance between when you should trust your gut when making decisions and when you should go ââ¬Ëby the numbersââ¬â¢ and only do what the data suggests as the best option. I have grown familiar with this tough-to-grasp lesson through difficult projects, as well as by observing the real successes and failures of businesses. What advice would you give to a student looking to major in a business-related field? The advice I would give to a student is that the coursework is only a sliver of the educationâ⬠¦ The concepts you learn may appear fully understood from a textbook reading, but to really grasp all the aspects of business, you have to apply it to the real world. Whether that is following relevant business news, reading about past ventures, or doing it yourself, there is more to preparing for the business world than just the classes. What has surprised you most about majoring in business? What surprised me most about majoring in business is how many unknown variables there will always be. A lot of information that is gathered is trusted as being accur ate, but it can never be 100%. Models and predictions are built up with a margin of error that I did not know even existed before my time at the Luter School.ââ¬Å"If I didnââ¬â¢t major in business, I would be majoring in or studyingâ⬠¦ Information technology or computer science. Absolutely everything is ââ¬Ëgoing digital,ââ¬â¢ and I would consider pursuing a career in pioneering and streamlining this transformation.â⬠Who most influenced your decision to pursue business in college? I do not think there was anyone outside of myself that strongly influenced me to pursue business. As I was completing high school, I became well aware of my strengths: writing, analyzing numbers and seeing patterns, and understanding how people tend to think. After some reading, I saw business as the best path to go down in order to create value by employing a synthesis of all three.Which academic, extracurricular or personal achievement are you most proud of? I think one achievement th at I am most proud of is my ability to get a 4.0 GPA last semester, which was the hardest semester I had in all of college. I was taking extremely work-intensive classes like the business capstone course, the first marketing capstone course, a business law course, as well as a marketing data analytics course. I had multiple projects that spanned the entire semester with a variety of different peer groups. While it did feel good to be able to get top marks on all of the projects and all of the classes at the end of the semester, what really made me proud was knowing that I had consistently done my best through some of the busiest months of my life. I am proud to look back on all that I had learned and how I had grown as a person in just one semester.Which classmate do you most admire? I could not think of anyone peer that I admire most, but there are a few traits that all my peers share which I admire very much. I am always amazed to see how peopleââ¬â¢s learning processes are all different. Even though we are all reading the same textbook, and when given a question will all reach the same answer, the path that everyone takes is unique. I think that one of the best parts about being in the Luter school is that I can be in an environment where I can learn with others and see these paths.Who would you most want to thank for your success? I think I would most want to thank my father for my success. Throughout my life, he has been a role model for me and I think that it is because of his influence that I grew up to be a hard-working, dedicated individual. What are the top two items on your bucket list? I want to go into space. I donââ¬â¢t know how long it will take before that becomes a feasible option because I donââ¬â¢t want a career as an astronaut. I just want a chance to orbit the Earth a couple of times.I want to see the Northern Lights. Pictures and videos donââ¬â¢t do them justice for me and I have a strong desire to go see them in person before I die or lose my vision in an unexpected accident. What are your hobbies? I spend a lot of time drawing geometric line art. I also enjoy listening to new types of music. What made Bo such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2019?ââ¬Å"Bo possesses the true qualities of a lifelong learner.à He is patient, diligent, optimistic, and enthusiastic. Is A Leader Or A Ruler - 957 Words
Ever since hierarchy became a way of life for us people, there has been quite a few misconceptions and even debates about what it means to be a leader or a ruler. Most will say that they both go hand in hand as they are the same, but they couldnââ¬â¢t be any more different. The fact that no one will even try to distinguish the two is in itself apathetic. While it is true that these two words share similar aspects, there are things that widen the gap between what it means to be either. A leader is a person who governs with compassion, flexibility, and most of all integrity, while in contrast to these qualities, the ruler governs out of fear, adamancy, and also callousness. People normally fail to see how different they are, but when their qualities are further looked into, one can see that there is much contrast between them. There are certain characteristics that we people believe should be carved into those who would preside over us, and compassion is one of them. In Chade-Meng T anââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËCompassionate Leaders are Effective Leadersââ¬â¢ it was stated that Tibetan Scholar Thupten Jinpa once described compassion as ââ¬Å"... a mental state endowed with a sense of concern for the suffering of others and aspiration to see that suffering relieved.â⬠With compassion, we can see that the leader is considerate of others rather than being indifferent to the comfort of the individuals around them. Without Sanctuary Lynching Photography in America Assignment
Essays on Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America Assignment The paper "Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America" is a great example of an assignment on history. The lynching which occurred in the U.S., which Without Sanctuary examines, occurred mostly in the Southern s like Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama. These events mostly took place between the years 1882 and 1968. The events would have been extremely traumatic for African American families of the time. The effect of the lynchings would have been compounded by the fact that there were photographs and souvenirs available of the events, which would have featured family members of the families of the victims. Psychologically, this type of event would have caused fear in the African American community, and it would be difficult to carry out normal daily tasks if affected by such fear. Being unable to leave the house for fear of falling victim to these groups would have made living a normal life possible. Additionally, lynchings would also have caused some anger in the African American community, as they were being unnecessarily targeted by racist groups through no fault of their own. The images tell an interesting story of the legal system in America during this time. The fact that these events were so commonplace, and were being broadcast so publically in the form of these photographs, means that the legal system would have understood that this was going on but there was very little fear of the law for these groups. It seems important that these events are discussed as part of American history in schools, despite the fact that it may be disturbing for some people, particularly the images. It is important to remember that racism existed in such an outward way in the U.S. as little as 50 years ago, and these murders were being carried out on the African American community in the public eye. It also helps people to understand more the history of race relations in the U.S., which is important for building a better future.
Premier Fitness Ethics Assignment free essay sample
Ethics Assignment Premier Fitness The actions in question regarding Premier Fitness Clubs were proven to be misleading and in violation of the competition act as well as the basic consumerism trend that has aimed to empower consumers and increase their rights. In their quest to meet the firmââ¬â¢s profit oriented objectives, objectives of being economically usefull, and to earn enough profit to survive, Premier Fitness seemingly decided that they could forgo the objective of being socially useful. Misleading/false advertising and marketing was employed that drastically reduced or eliminated social usefulness by underhandedly convincing customers to enter contracts with the fitness club that resulted in materially higher fees, undisclosed costs, and high total net costs than the advertising would lead their customers to believe. Information was not adequately disclosed to portray the true costs associated with gym membership and cancellation of membership was found to be excessively difficult. Premier Fitness also was found to be withdrawing money from cancelled customer accounts which is also unethical behavior on their part. We will write a custom essay sample on Premier Fitness Ethics Assignment or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is ironic that focusing on profit oriented objectives and the resulting unethical activity lead to the payment of a $200,000 fine by Premier Fitness for their unethical actions. Social usefulness was sacrificed by producing misleading advertisements that would lead customers to come to incorrect conclusions regarding total fees. This action violates the competition act and gave Premier Fitness and unethical advantage over their direct competition in the competitive business of fitness establishments. The competition act is structured to limit monopolistic behavior that could be damaging to smaller competitors and protect consumers, and by violating it, Premier Fitness could have negatively affected the competition in an unethical fashion as well as harmed consumers who ended up suffering greater financial losses than they had expected based on the advertising that they would have thought they fully understood. Premier Fitnessââ¬â¢ false/misleading advertising and marketing would have left customers to believe that Premier Fitness was giving lower prices than the competition, which was not necessarily the case. Customers would therefore wrongly choose Premier Fitnessââ¬â¢ services over those of the competition based on the superior price-point that Superior Fitness was seemingly offering. The result is that Premier Fitnessââ¬â¢ acts harmed both the customers themselves as well as the competition that was advertising in a more ethical manor and losing business to Premier because of it. Advertising produced by Premier Fitness was misleading in that it violated many of the ââ¬Ëdoââ¬â¢s and donââ¬â¢tsââ¬â¢ of advertising. For example, using of fine print that was excessively small and possibly not legible. The impression created by the ad was much different than what the fine print conveyed. Also, not all material information was disclosed in all advertising, as some information was strategically left out of some advertisements. Premierââ¬â¢s misleading advertising and fine-print resulted in the charging of higher prices when multiple prices were appearing on their advertised product. With the misleading nature of the advertisements, customers were seemingly charged above the advertised price. The result of legal actions taken against Premier Fitness has undoubtedly affected their reputation considerably. Wide-spread negative publicity toward the company has unquestionably had a negative impact on the companyââ¬â¢s operations. Websites designed to promote consumerism are a breeding grounds for the spreading of negative publicity towards unethical business operation. Although Premier continues to operate and has been in business for many years, it is conceivable that their reputation has been tarnished in a way that offsets any financial gains obtained through their unethical actions. Lost business due to poor reputation could easily have negatively impacted their financial objectives far more than gains achieved through misleading and false advertising. In order to fully recover from the negative effects on reputation that this incident has caused, Premier Fitness may benefit from re-aligning its objectives towards more of a customer oriented focus. Its marketing objectives must also be evaluation in order to be in line with such changes in the focus of the company objectives since marketing objectives often go hand-in-hand with company objectives. It is clear by the results observed in this case that Premier Fitness should have paid closer attention to the legal environment. Closer attention would have yielded the knowledge and understanding of the laws that inevitably were broken and could have guided Premier in a more ethical direction that would have bypassed the requirement for legal action and all the following negative publicity and financial ramifications that have haunted Premier Fitness thereafter.
